　　薫山 本間順治先生胸像
　薫山本間順治先生は山形県酒田市の名家に生まれ若くして日本刀の研究に志して刀剣学を樹立し文学博士の称号を得られた。その間1945年太平洋戦争の敗戦に際し、進駐軍は日本刀の統べてを武器として没収しようとしたが、先生は敢然これの美術面を強調して遂に彼等を説得し、為にわが民族が完成した世界に誇る鉄の文化財日本刀は永久に保存されることとなった。その功績は刀剣史上寔に比類がない。先生は又終戦後の混乱した刀剣界の再興を図り首唱して財団法人日本美術刀剣保存協会を創立せられたが、これが刀剣会の今日の未曾有の盛況を見る源泉となったことは周知のとおりである。
　今年先生が古希の寿を迎えられるに当たり、先生の弥栄と万才の寿を祈って先生の胸像建立の議が全国愛刀家の間に沛然として起こるに至った。よって建立の地をかつて先生が同志と心血を傾倒して建設された刀剣博物館の玄関に選び、像の制作は愛息本間薫山紀男君に委嘱、ここに永く先生の徳を景仰することとなった。

     Junji "Kunzan" Honma
Junji "Kunzan" honma was born of an eminent Japanese family in Sakata city of Yamagata prefebture. He went on to earn a doctorate in literature, and his dessertation on Japanese swords set the standard by which they are studeied today.

One of his most admirable contributions to Japanese sword preserbation was successfully petitioning  the Allied Forces to cease  the confiscation of swords from the Japanese people. In 1945,following Japan's defeat in the Second World War,Japan was occupeid by the Allied Forces. One of the occupational farce's policies was to confiscate all weapons (including Japanese swords). However,Kunzan Honma and Kanzan Sato protested to the Allied Forces General Head Quartes (GHQ) that Japanese swords were not merely weapons,but valuable are objects of excellent quality. As a result of their efforts,GHQ rescinded the order,allowing the Japanese people to retain possession of their prized swords. Through Kunzan and Kanzan's labors,many Japanese swords were saved from seizura,destruction,or removal from Japan. He led to the founding of the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords(NBTHK).
